The question however is why there's any correlation. At the moment, either side can spin this to sound good.SmartLXhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04447028072345461620noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4434842591971703006.post-90675034769005687602010-06-22T18:56:01.341-07:002010-06-22T18:56:01.341-07:00Perhaps Freud isnt the best example to cite being ...Perhaps Freud isnt the best example to cite being that he is one of the atheists profiled with an absent/dysfunctional father-son relationship.J Curtishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12746127431922685446noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4434842591971703006.post-62901094646048415082010-06-22T15:11:55.215-07:002010-06-22T15:11:55.215-07:00The idea that distant or absent fathers increase t...The idea that distant or absent fathers increase the tendency toward atheism is in stark contrast to the Freudian idea that belief in God is a collective neurotic longing for a father figure.

Put the two ideas together and you get something which is probably a good approximation of the truth: that when deprived of fathering, some people become more independent and some go looking for a replacement.SmartLXhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04447028072345461620noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4434842591971703006.post-68937313964817963342010-06-21T14:29:01.934-07:002010-06-21T14:29:01.934-07:00I can't speak to if people with an unhealthy f...I can't speak to if people with an unhealthy father figure are more likely to be atheists. But I can say that although my dad was a decent human being who did the best he knew how, due to his own background, he had some major deficiencies. For the most part he was an exceedingly not-present person. I've seen how that's affected my relationship with God in negative ways. But I've also seen how God, in His mercy and grace has provided ways for me to grow past that.Tracyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15692160455833039396noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4434842591971703006.post-2762883855343499812010-06-21T07:08:57.815-07:002010-06-21T07:08:57.815-07:00I don't think that it was the author's int...I don't think that it was the author's intent to generalize that all atheists had dysfunctional or non-existant relationships with their fathers. It all depends on what the parents teach the child in his formative years is what that child carries on into adulthood. Purely speculation on my part.photogrhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05149737419546300220noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4434842591971703006.post-45520138854476235072010-06-20T16:07:38.788-07:002010-06-20T16:07:38.788-07:00This idea is too reductionist and based on too sma...This idea is too reductionist and based on too small a sample size to comment on seriously but I will try anyway.

Yet, at the end of the day (or one's life) Christians can afford to be wrong.
